Life at BHDS

Brandeis Hillel Day School is unique among San Francisco’s top independent schools in offering a Jewish education. But what does that really mean? What does it mean to choose a Jewish day school education? What will your children learn here and what will your family experience at a Jewish school?

BHDS students achieve on an individual level; equally important, they also grow and learn as a community, and contribute to their community and the world. Brandeis Hillel seeks not merely to teach Jewish customs but to instill Jewish values: a commitment to do what is right, to support the community, to make the world a better place.

No doubt your children will come home humming the songs of Jewish holidays. At an early age, they will benefit from second language acquisition as they learn modern Israeli Hebrew. They will learn blessings and rituals known by Jewish people worldwide. They will learn how to be at home in a synagogue or at a Passover Seder, how to say Shabbat blessings. They will also learn how to engage in thoughtful and respectful debate about both current and timeless issues. They will learn what it means to be a part of a community. They will learn that when a classmate’s family has a celebration or a loss, the whole community will respond with a meal, a play date, a gathering. They will learn that the Bay Area Jewish Community is truly diverse and how to be inclusive of religious, social and familial differences. They will learn what it means to be part of a community and a worldwide culture that values both daily kindness and big efforts, that believes in repairing the world as much as it values succeeding in the world.

Brandeis Hillel students are known around the Bay Area for their kindness, their spirit, and their unity, and so are Brandeis Hillel families. Becoming a part of BHDS, means joining an inclusive and supportive community of friends and fellow-learners, and helping your children make the world a better place.
