ur unique outdoor education program places students where they best see, investigate, and learn about the environment - outdoors in nature

Both campuses share in exciting, age-appropriate, hands-on learning experiences for K-8 students. Leaving campus for a one-hour nature walk or a five-night experiential program broadens the scope of lessons learned within the walls of BHDS and adds deeper meaning to our students' education.

A cross-curricular approach integrates science with the arts, music, physical education, history, and Judaic studies. As a result, students learn content, as they develop independence and improve interpersonal skills.

  • Seventh Grade Outdoor Education Trip - Living in Nature

    Our seventh graders on both campuses returned from our annual four-day outdoor education trip this week to the Henry Coe State Park, San Mateo with a deeper connection to Judaism, the natural world and themselves. Our partner, Wilderness Torah, delivered a meaningful program that included hiking through the wilderness in groups; team-building and nature appreciation; activities such as learning how to start a fire, basket weaving and foraging for edible plants; swimming in a natural (chilly!) pool, and a "Shine Your Light" talent show by campfire.

  • Sixth Grade on Outdoor Education Trip

    Hikes and time outdoors framed the wonderful sixth grade expedition to Walker Creek Ranch, a Marin County nature retreat where they explored the land and wildlife of West Marin. On the trip, students from both campuses took advantage of the outdoors for hands-on science experiences in a variety of habitats including forest, pond, grasslands and streams. They also examined the ecology, geography and natural history of the area - and of course, learned more about each other and themselves...

  • Fifth Grade Outdoor Education Trip to Skylark Ranch

    Our fifth grade students from Marin and San Francisco came together for three days of outdoor study (and play) last week at Skylark Ranch in the Santa Cruz mountains. A redwood forest became their temporary home as they slept in tents, put scientific modeling to work through stargazing, and explored marine ecosystems while tidepooling.
