  • Library Update - Summer Reading Gets a Head Start

I kicked off summer reading this year in a variety of ways. Kindergarten heard The Plant Sitter by Gene Zion. It is about a boy who takes care of his neighbors’ plants with astonishing results. Third grade heard the last book in a series by D. B. Johnson about Henry David Thoreau, which describes his love of nature and hiking. Our students loved the whole series, and also saw, along with fourth and fifth grades, a YouTube video entitled Cain’s Arcade about a boy who makes an arcade out of cardboard boxes and has the surprise of his life. I highly recommend the whole family see this video. You will not be disappointed. Stay tuned for my summer reading recommendations next week...and please return all your books!

The summer reading lists are nearly ready - we'll also have a list of apps suitable for a variety of grades. Meanwhile, the library catalog is being updated and upgraded. In order to do that, ALL library books need to be returned. Please make sure any books your children or you have checked out are returned by Friday, May 25. Your prompt return of materials is very much appreciated!

About Our Library

Our library's mission is to serve our students, faculty and parents in every way. The collection contains more than 20,000 volumes, with books suitable for our entire community. Each section of the library is clearly labeled, and searchable via our counter computer - online access coming soon!

Our collection had been evaluated and strongly approved by Follett Services, a professional library service. In addition to our broad book collection, we have DVDs available to the teachers for use in the classroom.

We continue to add to our collections of books in Spanish and Hebrew. Spanish language books are located on the north wall of the library. The shelf is marked "Libros en Espanol." The Hebrew collection is on the most western free-standing bookcase in the library, labeled "Hebrew."

We have a parenting section where parents can find books on issues that are pertinent to their needs. This collection is also on the north wall, as well. Each collection has a spine label indicating "Spanish" or "Parenting." The library checks out laptops to the students and faculty for use in the classrooms.

Hours

The library hours are Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 3:15.

Class Visits and Due Dates

Each Kindergarten through fifth grade class visits the library once a week for a lesson and to choose books. Middle School students visit the library with teachers for special projects. Additionally, they can stop in at any time to choose books for leisure reading or books for assignments.

Books for students in grades kindergarten and first grade are checked out for . Grades two through eighth are checked out for and may be renewed for a reasonable time. Long-term projects have special due dates.

Checking Books Out

Books are available to be checked out without library staff present. On the circulation desk sits a blue binder with a sign out sheet and directions for checking a book out.

Birthday Book Program

Our Birthday Book Program is a wonderful way to celebrate your child's birthday through a book donation to the library! If you choose to make a small donation ($18 per book), your child comes to the library and chooses a title to add to our collection. A book plate with your child's name is placed in the book, and your child is the first one to check out this title. This program enables our library to receive more than 200 titles per year, and we gratefully acknowledge the generosity of our community.
