Seventh Graders Use Gumdrops to Build Brunelleschi-style Domes

Our seventh graders have been studying the history and cultural benchmarks of the Renaissance, including the achievements of Filippo Brunelleschi (1377-1466), the genius architect whose dome for the Cathedral of Florence was an engineering breakthrough. Working in pairs, with only gumdrops, toothpicks, and their wits, students tried to build domes with structural integrity without employing temporary supports. The challenge was to construct a dome strong enough to support one, or several, textbooks . . .

Sofer (Scribe) Visits BHDS

In anticipation of the holiday of Shavuot—the Jewish festival that celebrates the receiving of the Ten Commandments and the Torah at Sinai—our students learned from a sofer (a scribe) about some of the many rules and procedures regarding the writing of sacred texts. Zerach Greenfield, a sofer STaM from New York, demonstrated the tools a scribe uses. The acronym STaM stands for Sefer Torah, teffilin, and mezuzot.

Annual Faculty vs Students B-ball Game Grand Finale for Student Spring Carnival

The middle school Student Community Board's spring carnival came with fun, fundraising, a bouncy house and cotton candy as students celebrated the end of a week of standardized testing. All proceeds will go to a local charity, to be chosen by the board. Students enjoyed the gorgeous spring weather while cheering for their favorite b-ballers: either the varsity boys' basketball team or the BHDS faculty all-stars. The nail-biter ended in a tie, but the varsity players chose a sudden-death playoff and the faculty won, 35-33. PHOTOS

JCF Helps BHDS Prepare Lower School Garden

Nearly 20 young adults, lead by BHDS alum Michael Pearce and Ariella Leaffer, came from Jewish Community Federation's Young Adults Division (YAD) came to BHDS to help us clean up the patio behind first and second grades and put in new planters. Special thanks to the volunteers as well as our BHDS crew led by Abbe Wainwright, faculty member, and Boaz Mor, BHDS parent.

BHDS Students Raise $20K for American Heart Association's Jump Rope For Heart

BHDS participated raised more than $20K for the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope For Heart and Hoops For Heart program - two valuable programs that promote physical activity for children while contributing to our community. Our K-5 students raised life-saving funds through solicitations and letter-writing. Students Sofie S. (fifth grade) and Jacob R. (second grade) won special menion as "top fundraisers" in the program. "Our students learned a lot about heart health and had a great time fundraising," said said P.E. teacher and program coordinator Nobuo Kotani.

The I-Search Project: Iconic Sixth Grade Research Delivers Answers

Each year, our sixth graders choose a subject they're curious about, find experts to interview, spend weeks on investigation, and then produce detailed research papers and visual or digital models. The questions and topics posed are invariably fascinating: this year's include How did Peter Jackson create the on-screen world of the Fellowship of the Ring trilogy?, The Origin and Cultural Prevalence of the Meatball, The History of Amusement Parks, and What is a Linear Particle Accelerator and How Does it Work?...

Environmental Speaker at BHDS in Honor of Earth Week

Nearly 50 people attended the recent presentation by Ken Cook, president of the Environmental Working Group (EWG), who spoke to parents about "Smart Choices for Healthier Living." The event was made possible by the BHDS Parent Association's Environmental and Parent Education committees in honor of Earth Week.

First Grade Families Bike to School

Celebrating Earth Week, nearly 20 first graders joined their parents, siblings, and teachers in a "bike to school" event. Riders rode about two miles to school, and were greeted with live music at school courtesy of our middle school band. "It was so much fun for everyone!" said teacher Kelly McDonough.

Seventh Grade Outdoor Education Trip - Living in Nature

Our seventh graders on both campuses returned from our annual four-day outdoor education trip this week to the Henry Coe State Park, San Mateo with a deeper connection to Judaism, the natural world and themselves. Our partner, Wilderness Torah, delivered a meaningful program that included hiking through the wilderness in groups; team-building and nature appreciation; activities such as learning how to start a fire, basket weaving and foraging for edible plants; swimming in a natural (chilly!) pool, and a "Shine Your Light" talent show by campfire. Seventh Grade Math Gets Real

Seventh grade students experienced a real-life application of math concepts this week, measuring the height and depth of the steps on a staircase, determining the ratio, and calculating the angle of slope. Math gets real!
