6th Grade Does Real Life Math
Posted April 8, 2011
Students in 6th grade have been busy applying their many pre-algebra skills by applying them to real life. For example, students have applied their knowledge of concepts like area, radius, diameter and the understanding of pi to create cylinders, and others have applied their knowledge of percents to go on a "shopping spree."
Students selected a topic that ranged anywhere from renovating their bedroom to outfitting a basketball team. They were given a precise budget, six coupons, and sent on their way. They struggled to make their budget - and learned the impact of issues like sales tax.
The year will continue with these skills as we move into further geometry concepts, working with algebraic terms, and probability.
