Mathematics

In middle school we build on the strengths of the lower school program, increasing the amount and range of mathematics explored. A key component is the development of number sense through mental math. Calculators are used as tools and students build mathematical concepts through cooperative hands-on activities. Students use writing as well as mathematics to express their understanding of concepts.

Grade 6

The sixth grade curriculum emphasizes conceptual understanding while building upon the mastery of basic skills acquired in the lower school. The full mathematics spectrum is explored, focusing on how students learn and what they need to be prepared for in the future.

Grade 7

Problem-solving strategies and critical thinking skills are emphasized in seventh grade. Subjects include pre-algebra, integers, order of operations, probability and statistics, ratios and proportions, and geometry. Students study two- and three-dimensional geometry and build models that represent linear and exponential patterns of growth.

Grade 8

Students learn all of the traditional algebraic concepts — linear equations, polynomials, quadratic equations — but encounter them in real-life situations. This is a meaningful and grounded way for students to understand algebra. On a limited basis, we offer geometry or Stanford University's individualized math program for those students far advanced in mathematics.

  • Sixth Grade Builds Bridges Using "Real-life" Math

    Posted December 4, 2012

Our sixth grade students have been working on designing and building the strongest bridge possible—on time and within budget. "Through this project, we integrate complex mathematical concepts into a real-life setting," said teacher Melissa Freeman. Students work in small groups, acting as construction companies, with roles such as architect, accountant, transportation chief, and project director. The only materials allowed are popsicle sticks, glue, and cardboard, and the groups' creations will soon be put to the test to see how much weight they can hold. "Last year's winner held over 300 pounds," said Freeman. Stay tuned for this year's results!

  • Sixth Grade Math - Feeding the Aliens

    Posted September 13, 2012

Sixth graders recently discovered the importance of following the order of operations in math by...feeding an alien. Students were asked to write down the steps to make a proper peanut butter and jelly sandwich. "They then worked with alien partners to actually create those 'edible' sandwiches using their steps…quite a messy endeavor, but quite delicious in the end…and definitely proving the point that it’s ALWAYS important to follow the rules!" said teacher Melissa Freeman

  • Math is a Carnival at BHDS

    Posted June 5, 2012

Our recent BHDS Math Carnival had students grades K-8 buzzing with excitement as lower school students played with a variety of math games all uniquely created by our talented middle school mathematicians. "This a very fun event for our students at the end of the year and a great way for our older students to demonstrate leadership," said teacher Melissa Freeman....
